Non-deserving awards for deserving persons..

Sometime I wonder how the awards were chosen for the deserved, both in films and science. Well I am going to discuss more about films, the only point i could make for science is the Nobel prize given for Einstein. We know his famous theory is theory of relativity, but guess on what subject he got his first Nobel, it is the theory of photoelectic effect in 1905 (though I know a little about relativity, I know much about photoelectic effect).
Now lets talk about oscars, the first one should be worth discussed is the oscars for 2002, the best actor went to denzel washington for training day, now denzel is of course without doubt one of the best actors. But I was so surprised he got his first oscar for best actor in training day. I would say this film is one of his worst. The deserving actors for that year would be either sean penn for 'I am sam' or russell crowe for 'the beautiful mind'. Actually it should've been sean penn, his acting was extraordinary as a retarded man fighting for custody of his child. On the contrary denzel should have won his oscar for 'the hurricane' in 1999 (but it went to kevin spacey for 'american beauty'). It was said that denzel won the award because of the severe lobby to recognize african american actors. (halle berry, another african american actress won her best actress for 'monsters ball', truely a deserved performance)
Russell crowe too fall in the same line, he got his first oscar for 'the gladiator' in 2001. I agree gladiator is a good film and russell's acting was good, but not that extraordinary that compared to his 'the beautiful mind'. The deserving person for that year would be our own tom hanks in 'cast away'. Likewise sean penn won his first oscar for 'mystic river' in 2004. When I saw the film after the oscars I was heavily disappointed. On compared to 'I am sam' this film is no where. (I looked at the other contenders: it is johnny depp for pirates, bill murray in lost in translation, ben kingsley for house of sand and fog and jude law for cold mountain. I haven't seen house of sand and fog, but I can't see any other performance is noteworthy).
I beleive this happens every now and then. A fine example would be the case of al pacino. Many of us know his pinacle of performance would be the great 'godfather' series, but did you know he never any won oscars for godfather films (marlon won for best actor for godfather Ist part and Robert de Nero won supporting actor for IInd part). After being nominated for 11 times including god father, he finally won his only oscar for 'Scent of a woman' ( I liked this movie, al's acting in the climax school scene is too good).
Sometime it also happens at our national film awards. This year you'd known saif ali khan has won for some stupid movie. I liked his acting in 'dil chahta hai', but I seriously doubt that there is no serious acting for last year. I heard there was a tough competition between hrithik roshan and vikram, last year between 'koi mil gaya' and 'pithamagan'. What a joke, I haven't seen 'koi mil gaya' (though I have seen some songs and trailer even when I felt so hard seeing him in such role) but how come they still have him in competition after seeing pithamagan. Nowadays our national award are too politically biased. Remember anil kapoor and ravina winning national awards some year back.
